The Rapture of the Saints at Jesus' Second Coming refers to the time mentioned by Paul in first Thessalonians when Jesus comes to this earth again and His faithful followers will meet Him in the air.
"For the Lord Himself shall descend from heaven with a shout, with the voice of the archangel, and with the trump of God: and the dead in Christ shall rise first: Then we which are alive and remain shall be caught up together with them in the clouds, to meet the Lord in the air: and so shall we ever be with the Lord."
1 Thessalonians 4:16-17

Signs of Jesus' Second Coming

A Bible Lesson for Children.
Children's Bible Lesson on the Signs of Jesus Return

What is the Rapture? - The word "rapture" is not in the Bible. But the Biblical meaning most often ascribed to the word is usually based around the fact that when Jesus returns the second time with power, and great glory, Christ's followers will be "caught up" into the air.

Please read the following Bible passages to get an understanding of this event.

Immediately after the tribulation of those days shall the sun be darkened, and the moon shall not give her light, and the stars shall fall from heaven, and the powers of the heavens shall be shaken: And then shall appear the sign of the Son of man in heaven: and then shall all the tribes of the earth mourn, and they shall see the Son of man coming in the clouds of heaven with power and great glory. And he shall send his angels with a great sound of a trumpet, and they shall gather together his elect from the four winds, from one end of heaven to the other. Matthew 24:29-31

For this we say unto you by the word of the Lord, that we which are alive [and] remain unto the coming of the Lord shall not prevent them which are asleep. For the Lord himself shall descend from heaven with a shout, with the voice of the archangel, and with the trump of God: and the dead in Christ shall rise first: Then we which are alive [and] remain shall be caught up together with them in the clouds, to meet the Lord in the air: and so shall we ever be with the Lord. 1 Thes. 4:15-17

Behold, I show you a mystery; We shall not all sleep, but we shall all be changed, In a moment, in the twinkling of an eye, at the last trump: for the trumpet shall sound, and the dead shall be raised incorruptible, and we shall be changed. 1 Corinthians 15:51-52

When is the Rapture? - When the "rapture" or gathering together of the followers of Jesus takes place is easily seen from the following passage:

Immediately after the tribulation of those days shall the sun be darkened, and the moon shall not give her light, and the stars shall fall from heaven, and the powers of the heavens shall be shaken: And then shall appear the sign of the Son of man in heaven: and then shall all the tribes of the earth mourn, and they shall see the Son of man coming in the clouds of heaven with power and great glory. And he shall send his angels with a great sound of a trumpet, and they shall gather together his elect from the four winds, from one end of heaven to the other. Matthew 24:29-31

Here is the order of events as described by the Bible.

1. Tribulation
2. Signs in Heaven
3. Sign of Jesus in heaven
4. Multitudes of lost people mourn as they realize they were decieved and it is too late
5. Jesus returns in great glory and power
6. Sound of great trumpet
7. Angels gather the elect from the entire earth

Why is there a Rapture? - Prior to Jesus' return there will be a great crisis over worship, with much coersion and persecution of those who will not go along with the religion that is sanctioned by the nations. This time of trouble will be so great that if Jesus did not return and put an end to it, there would be noone left alive.

For then shall be great tribulation, such as was not since the beginning of the world to this time, no, nor ever shall be. And except those days should be shortened, there should no flesh be saved: but for the elect's sake those days shall be shortened. - Matthew 24:21-22

Below are some passages that refer to the coming religious crisis.

And I saw one of his heads as it were wounded to death; and his deadly wound was healed: and all the world wondered after the beast. And they worshipped the dragon which gave power unto the beast: and they worshipped the beast, saying, Who [is] like unto the beast? who is able to make war with him? And there was given unto him a mouth speaking great things and blasphemies; and power was given unto him to continue forty [and] two months. And he opened his mouth in blasphemy against God, to blaspheme his name, and his tabernacle, and them that dwell in heaven. And it was given unto him to make war with the saints, and to overcome them: and power was given him over all kindreds, and tongues, and nations. And all that dwell upon the earth shall worship him, whose names are not written in the book of life of the Lamb slain from the foundation of the world. If any man have an ear, let him hear. Rev. 13:3-9

And deceiveth them that dwell on the earth by [the means of] those miracles which he had power to do in the sight of the beast; saying to them that dwell on the earth, that they should make an image to the beast, which had the wound by a sword, and did live.

And he had power to give life unto the image of the beast, that the image of the beast should both speak, and cause that as many as would not worship the image of the beast should be killed. And he causeth all, both small and great, rich and poor, free and bond, to receive a mark in their right hand, or in their foreheads: And that no man might buy or sell, save he that had the mark, or the name of the beast, or the number of his name. Rev. 13:14-17

Is the Rapture a Secret?
(Will people just suddenly disappear?
)
The disciples asked Jesus about His return, "what will be the sign of your coming and the end of the world", and when shall these things take place?

After spending much time on the signs of end Jesus gave a warning about false Christs and VERY DECEPTIVE false ideas about his return.

"Then if any man shall say unto you, Lo, here [is] Christ, or there; believe [it] not. For there shall arise false Christs, and false prophets, and shall show great signs and wonders; insomuch that, if [it were] possible, they shall deceive the very elect."

Near the end of the world Jesus prophesied that some people would say that He has returned and is appearing in various places on earth, and others will be saying that He has come, or is coming, in a secret way.

"Behold, I have told you before. Wherefore if they shall say unto you, Behold, he is in the desert; go not forth: behold, [he is] in the secret chambers; believe [it] not."

Jesus says: Don't believe them, and then gives a description of what His second coming will be like:

"For as the lightning cometh out of the east, and shineth even unto the west; so shall also the coming of the Son of man be."

The second coming of Jesus will be so bright it will be like lightning, it will not be a secret to anyone. You won't have to read about it in the newspapers. People are not going to suddenly disappear at a "secret rapture" because when the "rapture" takes place many things will be happening. Don't take my word on it, read it from the Bible.

The Bible says: "Behold, he cometh with clouds; and every eye shall see him, and they [also] which pierced him: and all kindreds of the earth shall wail because of him. Even so, Amen." Revelation 1:7

"For wheresoever the carcase is, there will the eagles be gathered together."

Jesus indicated that there will be weeping, wailing, great destruction and death at His return, those who are left behind will be dead and not have a second chance.

"Immediately after the tribulation of those days shall the sun be darkened, and the moon shall not give her light, and the stars shall fall from heaven, and the powers of the heavens shall be shaken:"

"And then shall appear the sign of the Son of man in heaven: and then shall all the tribes of the earth mourn, and they shall see the Son of man coming in the clouds of heaven with power and great glory."

After the tribulation Great and marvelous signs occur, the wicked and deceived people on the earth mourn as they see Jesus come with great power and glory, because they realize they are not ready to meet him nor will they have a second chance.

"And he shall send his angels with a great sound of a trumpet, and they shall gather together his elect from the four winds, from one end of heaven to the other." Matthew 24:23-31

The Bible Rapture occurs, all of God's people are rescued by the angels in the closing moments of earth's history.

"Behold, I show you a mystery; We shall not all sleep, but we shall all be changed, In a moment, in the twinkling of an eye, at the last trump: for the trumpet shall sound, and the dead shall be raised incorruptible, and we shall be changed." 1 Corinthians 15:51-52

The raptured will get new bodies and will be with their Lord ever after!

"For this we say unto you by the word of the Lord, that we which are alive and remain unto the coming of the Lord shall not prevent them which are asleep. For the Lord himself shall descend from heaven with a shout, with the voice of the archangel, and with the trump of God: and the dead in Christ shall rise first: Then we which are alive and remain shall be caught up together with them in the clouds, to meet the Lord in the air: and so shall we ever be with the Lord. Wherefore comfort one another with these words."
1 Thessalonians 4:15-18

How can I be sure not to be "Left Behind"?

Few understand that there is a great religious crisis coming, and the things you can do now to prepare for it is make your calling and election sure by asking God to forgive you of your sins and then believe that does forgive you. Ask Him for the gift of repentance and the power to turn away from your sins. Ask Him to create in you a clean heart and be doers of the word and not hears only. A good place to start reading the Bible is Jesus' sermon on the mount in Matthew chapter 5.
